The famous Lung-Ta prayer flags mean “wind horse” and are hung in extremely isolated places such as the Himalayan summits, as well as more everyday locations such as houses or places of worship, like monasteries or Buddhist temples. Traditionally there are five flags, each with a different colour: blue, white, red, green and yellow. And they respectively represent the five elements – sky (blue), air (white), fire (red), water (green) and earth (yellow). Usually, the flags have Mantras printed on them that calls for harmony, compassion, wisdom, strength, peace and protection. It is believed that the wind carries the prayer blessings printed on the flags on the air and into the surrounding area.
